Discover Bettendorf, an unknown jewel of Luxembourg

Rudolphe ABEN

Situated in the valley of the Sûre, the small town of Bettendorf is a real unknown jewel of Luxembourg. Although not as well known as the larger cities of Luxembourg-City and Esch-sur-Alzette, Bettendorf is worth discovering for its picturesque landscapes, its cultural heritage and its outdoor activities.
Bettendorf is surrounded by green hills and lush forests, making it a great place for hikers and cyclists. Fishing enthusiasts will also enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Sûre, where they can try their luck at trout or crayfish fishing.
The heart of the town is the Place de la Mairie, where the Saint-Nicolas church and the historic town hall are located. The 18th century church is an impressive example of Baroque architecture. It also houses a collection of religious paintings and wooden sculptures from the region.
The Town Hall is a 19th century building with a beautiful stone façade. It now houses administrative offices, but it is still possible to have a look inside.
For history lovers, the Musée régional de la Sûre is a must. This small museum has exhibitions on rural life in the region over the centuries and on local traditions such as beer and cheese making.
Finally, for gourmets, Bettendorf has no shortage of restaurants serving delicious local cuisine, often accompanied by locally brewed beer. Trout dishes are particularly popular in the region.
In short, Bettendorf is an ideal destination for nature and culture lovers. With its picturesque landscape, historical heritage and outdoor activities, this small Luxembourg town is well worth discovering.
